Annual Golf Classic
Oct 23, 2015
Stone Mountain Golf Club
1145 Stonewall Jackson Dr, Stone Mountain, GA 30083

The Georgia Tech Black Alumni Organization (GTBAO) is proud to present its annual Golf Classic—a community-celebrated networking golf tournament. The Georgia Institute of Technology is known for its highly ranked undergrad and graduate programs, diversity among its 20,000+ currently enrolled students, first full-time football coach, John Heisman—whom the Heisman Memorial Trophy was named in honor of, rich culture rooted in the heart of Atlanta, GA, and even alumnus Bobby Jones—who founded The Masters golf tournament. With the latter in mind, not to mention such excellence in academics and athletics, it is no wonder the idea to begin a legacy of providing student scholarships and business networking opportunities through golfing was born to executive board members and the GTBAO leadership. This year’s event will simply be the best hole of notable community tradition of golfing. This effort will support "80 Acres and a Mule Scholarship Fund" as well as the activities of GTBAO.

"What is '80 Acres and a Mule Scholarship'?", you may ask. The 80 Acres and a Mule Scholarship Endowment Fund was created in 2010 by a group of student leaders who matriculated at Georgia Tech during the 1980s. This scholarship fund was established in the spirit of giving students a fresh new start. You may find this very similar to the promise Major General Sherman made on January 16, 1865 when he gave Special Field Orders that provided 40 acres and a mule to the newly freed men as a means of providing a solid start for the future.

African-American students are frequently among the first generation in their family to attend college. Since college is generally a new start for all high school students, this scholarship's given name speaks to the new and first experiences awaiting many African American scholars. The 80 Acres and a Mule Scholarship will benefit a first generation need-based student matriculating at Georgia Tech.

As an Alum, you know how challenging Georgia Tech can be at times. Please help an undergraduate by just participating in this fun and exciting event.

Registration

Registration will be setup in front of the club house where a team of volunteers will direct you for the day's event. You can look forward to a customized gift bag provided by our sponsors, a continental breakfast, and jolt of java served to energize your team for the performance of a lifetime. Our tournament director will then make important announcements, special recognitions, scramble rules, and hazard warnings. All players will then proceed in-cart to their assigned holes which will tee off the competition. You are bound to enjoy the fun, but make sure to bring your "A" game; only "D" games will be sold in the clubhouse for a small fee.

Tournament Golf

"Scramble" or "Best Ball"
Rules of the Game

  • ALL PLAYERS ON A TEAM WILL HIT THEIR OWN BALL FROM THE TEE.
  • THE TEAM WILL CHOOSE THE BEST POSITIONED BALL AND THE ENTIRE TEAM WILL BEGIN THEIR NEXT STROKE FROM THIS POSITION.
  • THIS IS REPEATED FOR EACH STROKE UNTIL A BALL IS HIT INTO THE CUP.
  • THE TEAM WITH THE FEWEST STROKES, WINS.

Extra Help or Do Overs

You will also be allowed to buy a two-foot piece of string for $10. I know you are asking "Why would I want to do that?" The string will be used to add inches to your putts. Let me give you an example. Say you have a thirty-foot putt and you are the last putter in the group. You putt the ball and it starts to roll toward the hole. As it gets closer to the hole you start to raise your putter in victory but when the ball arrives at the cup, it rolls around the rim of the cup two times and then jumps out of the hole two inches from the cup. Any other time you will have to take another stroke, but with the string, you can use two inches of it and call it good. Now is this string magical or WHAT?

On this day, everything is for sale. Our goal is to raise as much scholarship money as possible to help students finance their Georgia Tech education. Therefore, we are also offering mulligans for the low, low price of $20. For those who are unfamiliar, mulligans are do overs. Some people say: "There are no do overs in life." However, on this day you can have a do over. And in golf, the second man or woman is always better.

This format should allow all golfers of every level to have fun and compete for gifts and prices.

Award Ceremony

At the conclusion of play, lunch will be serviced to all participants, volunteers and guests. The award ceremony will begin with the presentation of contest and overall tournament winners, creating the perfect opportunity to start (or continue) networking with one another. We will also have an affinity group competition. Which group has the best golfers? Will it be the athletes, fraternities, sororities or the GDIs?

Consider how much fun it will be seeing old friends, competing in a friendly competition and giving back. Now that is a GREAT day! Please come join us and make this event a reality. Sign up today and give back!
